ART of Storytelling !
Storytelling is an art to the fourth word of handing over actions using metaphors, sound and expressions. Generally the storyteller and audience form an integral part of storytelling. The audience tries to catch the point by making a picture from the expression and language of the storyteller. Every culture has something to say. These stories later become part of learning, amusement, and conservation thereby infusing moral principles. Many storytellers are honored just by the way they create wonders with their head and voice. Script, dialogue and characters are important essentials of storytelling. It has been noticed that people have often used storytelling to provide teaching to others but at the same time it is unfortunate to see such stories being fabricated for personal gains.
The art of storytelling is constantly changing because of changing mindset and advancement of technology. This can be noticed when we see the various stages of storytelling. Previously it consisted of only gestures and expression, but later on mediums like drawings and pictures were used to convey stories. With development of mankind, people used writing as a storytelling medium and this was later accepted worldwide. Technological changes have also affected the way stories are told. Now it is done through multimedia presentations. Fables, myths, Solomon , parables are the various types of stories that we generally hear and they may carry romantic, humorous, or tragic mood. So story telling is basically one type of human expression which encourages the listener to visualize. It would be wrong to think that story telling only involves words because it is seen that many storytellers use physical movement to enhance their style. Story telling can take place anywhere and in any situation, be it in religious ceremony, in gardens, or in kitchen – practically anywhere. In the US when art of story telling was revived in 1970, it encouraged many storytellers to take this art as a profession. These professionals later took part in various competitions and festivals.
As a conclusion it can be said that story telling is also one type of fine art and it can be developed further by combining it with drama, comedy, music, dance and other forms of expression.
