Higher Education In the United States
Higher education in the United States denotes a wide range of higher education institutions in the US. Substantial research and financing have assisted the colleges and universities in the US to rank among the most esteemed educational institutions all over the world. Higher education in the United States is specifically interesting to professors, international students and research workers in the hunt for academic brilliance. As per the Academic Ranking of World Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, over 30 of the top ranking 45 educational institutions are located in the United States (as evaluated by research productivity and recognitions). Private universities, public universities, community colleges and liberal arts colleges, all have an important part to play in the domain of higher education. An even more potent trend is demonstrated by the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities where 103 universities in the US have been placed in the top 200.
As per UNESCO, the United States ranks second in terms of the number of higher educational institutions across the world. The overall number is 5,758 and on an average, there are over 115 institutions in every state. The number of students pursuing higher education in the country is also the maximum and the number is 14,261,778, which is approximately 4.75% of the overall population.
The United States Census Bureau carried out the American Community Survey in 2006 and discovered that 19.5% of the population did go to college but was without any degree and 17.1% had a bachelor’s degree, 7.4% had an associate’s degree and 9.9% had a professional or postgraduate degree. Just a little gender gap was there: of the total population, 27% possessed a bachelor’s degree or more and the proportion of men (27.9%) was slenderly bigger than women (26.2%). The number of start-up companies established in 1995 was 169 (that is higher than 1,100 companies established during 1980-1995) and for them those exclusive patents were an essential component. The certification of university research spin-off contributes to the American economy by generating over 1,50,000 employments every year.
