Silent Film

A film with no harmonized sound is known to us as a silent film. The process of mixing motion pictures with sound came into being in 1920 and with that silent film basically moved out. The era of silent films is often referred as the “Age of the Silver Screen”.

In those days, silent films had few technical errors. For example they were being played at an incorrect pace which made it appear as if they were primeval and not worth watching. Silent films used onscreen titles to relate story plots, important dialogue and sometimes remarks on the shots for the convenience of the viewers and this made the work of a title writer very important. All this was done as there were no sounds used in the film and this acted as the graphical representation which is an essential part of the film.

Live music played a vital part in imparting touching clues to the audience of a silent film. Pianist, organist were hired to give the background score and it was mainly inspired from the medieval history. It provided jobs to large number of musicians. Body language and facial expression were used mainly by the actors to convey their feelings.

In those days natural color processing were not available as a result, films were tinted which indicated the time and mood of the film for e.g green color were used to depict a mystifying mood, fire were represented with red color, day time was usually shown with yellow and night with blue color. Whatever people say, it was truly a fun in those days.
