Are Today’s Sportsmen Like “Gladiators” Of The Past?

Violence in sports is an aggression shown by a player in a sporting context with the intention of causing physical anguish or hurting someone who may be a player, a fan, a trainer, or even a sport official .This untoward activity does not support the flavor with which a SPORT should be played.

There are however various hypotheses as to why players become forceful while they take part in sports. Researchers have found out biological, mental and even social answers behind such aggressive behavior of sportsmen. Science indicates being hostile is a primary reaction of human beings.

Unfortunately sports have become a place where athletes can display their aggression, which often makes them excited during a game. Such violence is mostly noticed in games like rugby, football, hockey, boxing, wrestling etc. Sometimes it is seen that fans plays an important part in provoking the players. It is often seen that tickets are sold too cheaply for a particular game thereby allowing hooliganism.

We can compare today’s sportsmen to the “The Gladiators” of the past who used to entertain people with deadly fights.

Violence in sports does affect children who may in turn copy such violent behavior. Physical instructor and coaches should play an important part to bring positive atmosphere in a game.

Children should be taught to avoid violence in sports from the very beginning of their sporting career. Pressurizing them to win is something that needs to be avoided. They should be encouraged to develop their skills and not be forced to play when they are not physically fit. They should be told to have fun and enjoy the game, only then can we expect to see less violence in sports.
